How to sew facings on a lined garment | Secure and clean finish

Keeping facings neatly in place on a lined garment is one of those finishing details that makes all the difference. This tutorial shows you a simple hand-stitching technique to secure facings invisibly from the inside — giving jackets, dresses, and coats a polished, professional look with no visible stitching on the outside.

Materials needed

  • Matching thread
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Pins or clips
  • Iron

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the garment

Turn your garment inside out so the wrong side is facing outward. Position the facing against the main fabric with right sides together, making sure all edges are properly aligned before you begin stitching.

  2. Sew the facing in place

Stitch along the lower edge of the facing, stopping precisely at the edge. This machine stitch anchors the facing to the garment at the seam and gives you a clean, secure base before finishing by hand.

  3. Secure the facing by hand

Using a needle and thread, hand stitch the edge of the facing to the wrong side of the garment. Take a tiny stitch in the garment fabric and one in the seam allowance of the facing — just as you would when securing a facing inside a sleeve. Work evenly along the full length so the facing stays flat and invisible from the outside.

  4. Check and press

Turn the garment right side out and check that the facing lies completely flat with no bumps or rolling. Press lightly with an iron if needed — a good press is what gives the inside of a garment that truly finished, crisp look.

Pro tip

Keep your hand stitches small and evenly spaced, and avoid pulling the thread too tightly — this prevents any dimpling or puckering on the right side of the garment. Using a thread that matches your fabric precisely makes the stitches even harder to spot, even on close inspection.
