How to sew an invisible stitch
A hand-sewing technique for hems and finishes that need to stay completely hidden — perfect for securing cuffs, hems, and facings with a clean, professional result.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Work right to left
Sew from the right to the left side of your garment to maintain better control and keep your stitches evenly spaced.
-
Start inside the fold
Insert the needle from inside the fold and bring it out exactly on the edge. This hides the starting knot neatly out of sight.
-
Catch a few threads
Directly across from the fold, pick up just one or two threads from the main fabric. The less you grab, the more invisible the stitch will be.
-
Slide through the fold
Re-enter the fold close to where you came out, then slide the needle inside for 3–6 mm (⅛″–¼″) before bringing it out again.
-
Alternate and repeat
Keep alternating between catching a small thread from the garment and sliding the needle through the fold. Build a steady rhythm.
-
Maintain even tension
Keep stitches evenly spaced and avoid pulling the thread too tightly — excess tension will cause the fabric to pucker and become visible.
-
Secure and check
Finish with a small knot hidden inside the fold. Regularly flip the garment over to confirm the stitches remain invisible from the outside.
Pro tip
Use a fine needle and a thread that matches your fabric precisely. Working slowly gives you more control and keeps each stitch even — which is what makes the result look truly professional.
