Step-by-step instructions

To sew this pocket, you will need the welt, the front pocket, and the back pocket with the facing. Before starting, pin and sew the facing to the back pocket, right sides together. In the video, the back pocket and the facing are already sewn.

  1. Mark the pocket placement

Use tailor’s chalk or basting to mark the welt pocket opening on the right side of the fabric. Apply interfacing to the wrong side in that area.

  2. Prepare the welt

Interface the welt piece and fold it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Sew the two short sides with a 1.5 cm seam allowance, then mark the seam allowance line with chalk.

  3. Attach the welt

Place the welt right sides together on the fabric, aligning its seam allowance line with the bottom line of the pocket opening. Sew along the line, stopping exactly at the corners. Backstitch at start and end.

  4. Attach the back pocket piece and cut the opening

Mark the back pocket’s seam allowance line. Place the right side of the back pocket over the fabric, aligning the marked line with the top line of the opening. Sew the same way as with the welt, then cut along the center of the opening.

  5. Turn and press

Push the back pocket through the opening to the wrong side. Push the welt piece upward through the opening to the top. Press the triangle edges on each side.

  6. Attach the front pocket piece

Align the front pocket piece right sides together with the welt edge and sew along the same previous line. Position the pocket pieces correctly before sewing.

  7. Final assembly

On the wrong side, sew along the triangle edges to secure everything in place. Pin the two pocket bag pieces right sides together and sew all around. Trim excess fabric and finish edges as desired.

Pro tip

Before cutting the welt opening, double-check your markings and make a small horizontal snip at the center. Then carefully clip into the corners with precision — this reduces the risk of overcutting and ensures the corners turn out sharp and clean.
