Step-by-step instructions
-
Sew the zipper
Begin by sewing your invisible zipper to the garment in the usual way, using an invisible zipper foot to stitch as close to the teeth as possible. Test that it opens and closes smoothly before moving on.
-
Pin the neckline
Pin the facing and/or lining to the neckline with right sides together, making sure all edges and seam lines are carefully aligned before stitching.
-
Sew the neckline
Stitch all the way around the neckline, sewing evenly and consistently. Take your time around any curves to keep the seam smooth and accurate.
-
Trim the seam
Trim the seam allowance around the neckline to reduce bulk, and clip any curves so the edge lies flat and smooth once turned.
-
Understitch
Press the seam allowance toward the facing or lining, then understitch a few millimetres from the seam on the facing or lining side. This keeps the facing from rolling to the outside and gives the neckline a crisp, clean edge.
-
Attach the facing or lining to the zipper
Pin the facing or lining right sides together with the garment, sandwiching the zipper tape between the layers. Make sure everything is flat and aligned before you sew.
-
Sew along the zipper tape
Using a zipper foot, sew along the zipper tape on both sides to secure the facing or lining in place. Sew slowly and check regularly that all layers are caught evenly.
-
Zip up
Zip the zipper up to the very top of the garment and check that the neckline edges align cleanly on both sides. Make any adjustments before closing the lining.
-
Close the lining
Pin the lining pieces right sides together, starting from the zipper seam. Sew down to the hem to close the lining completely, then press the finished seam for a smooth, professional interior.
Pro tip
Before stitching, gently press the zipper teeth open with a warm iron — this lets you sew much closer to the teeth and makes the zipper truly invisible. Press the neckline seam thoroughly after understitching too, as a well-pressed edge holds its shape and makes attaching the facing to the zipper area much easier to control.
