How to sew an invisible zipper on a garment | Step-by-step tutorial
An invisible zipper creates a seamless, elegant closure with no visible stitching from the outside. This tutorial walks you through the full process step by step — ideal for beginners and experienced sewists looking for a clean, professional finish on any garment.
If your zipper goes all the way to the top edge of the garment, use the same technique but position the zipper so it finishes at the very top.
Materials needed
- Invisible zipper
- Matching thread
- Invisible zipper foot
- Pins or clips
- Iron
- Scissors or thread snips
Step-by-step instructions
-
Mark the stitching points
Mark the exact points where your stitching will start and stop on both the zipper tape and the fabric. Precise marks here are the key to a well-aligned zipper with clean ends.
-
Sew the invisible zipper
Using your invisible zipper foot, align the left side of the zipper with the left fabric piece right sides together and pin in place. Repeat for the right side. Sew as close to the zipper teeth as possible without stitching over them, working from the top downward on each side. Test that the zipper opens and closes smoothly.
-
Close the upper and lower fabric sections
Place the fabric pieces right sides together and pin the sections above and below the zipper. Sew starting from the previous stitching line, overlapping slightly at the zipper ends for a clean, secure join with no gap at the bottom of the zipper.
-
Secure the base of the zipper
Stitch each side of the zipper tape to the seam allowance to anchor it firmly in place. This prevents the zipper from shifting or creating bulk at the bottom of the opening over time.
Pro tip
Before stitching, gently press the zipper teeth open with a warm iron — this lets you get the needle as close to the teeth as possible, which is what makes the zipper truly invisible. Always sew from the top of the zipper downward on each side to keep the tension even and prevent any twisting of the tape.
