The ASTUR dress is designed for woven fabrics with medium weight and good structure, allowing the pleats to stand beautifully while keeping an elegant drape.
Recommended fabrics:
Raw silk (silk noil) – used in the photos; structured yet breathable, ideal for defined pleats
Silk twill or heavy silk crepe for a dressier version with body
Viscose twill / rayon twill – fluid but structured, excellent for pleats
Tencel™ twill for a modern look with weight and movement
Cotton sateen or cotton twill for a crisp, everyday version
Linen or linen–viscose blends with medium weight for a natural, structured result
Fabric to avoid:
Very lightweight fabrics (voile, chiffon, habotai)
Stretch or knit fabrics
Fabrics that are too stiff or thick (heavy canvas, upholstery fabrics)
Recommended fabric weight
180–240 g/m²
This weight range ensures:
pleats remain visible and structured
the skirt keeps its shape at the hem
the waist wrap sits nicely without collapsing
Choose a medium-weight woven fabric with structure. Fabrics that are too light will not hold the pleats properly. The version shown in the photos is sewn in raw silk, which offers the perfect balance between structure and drape.
Sewing your own garment means you are the creator of your piece — feel free to experiment with fabrics not mentioned here, and the result can be beautiful. Don’t hesitate to explore and try different options.

FABRIC: 3.30 meters / 130 inches
LINING: 2.60 meters / 103 inches
The amount of fabric needed for your pattern depends on the pattern size, the width and design of the fabric you plan to use.
