How to sew an Italian pocket | Step-by-step sewing tutorial

An Italian pocket creates a strong, elegant opening with a beautifully clean finish — a technique commonly used on trousers, skirts, and jackets. This detailed tutorial walks you through every stage, from assembling the pocket pieces to securing them to the garment.

Materials needed

  • Garment front and back pieces
  • Pocket facing — piece no. 1
  • Pocket bag — piece no. 2
  • Under pocket — piece no. 3
  • Matching thread
  • Pins or clips
  • Iron

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Assemble the pocket facing and pocket bag

Place the pocket facing (piece 1) and pocket bag (piece 2) right sides together and pin along the curved edge of the pocket opening. Stitch along the curve, clip the seam allowance to help it lie flat, then finish the seam with a serger or zigzag stitch. Press and set aside.

  2. Attach the under pocket to the garment front

Place the under pocket (piece 3) right sides together with the garment front, following your pattern markings. Pin, stitch, clip the seam allowance if needed, then finish the edge with a serger or zigzag stitch. Press with the under pocket lying flat.

  3. Fold and press the pocket opening

Fold the under pocket to the inside of the garment so the pieces are now wrong sides together. Press the pocket opening carefully to define a sharp, clean edge — take your time here as this fold determines the look of the finished opening.

  4. Topstitch the pocket opening

Sew a first row of topstitching a few millimetres from the pocket opening edge. Add a second parallel row if desired — this reinforces the opening and gives the pocket its distinctive, tailored appearance.

  5. Close the pocket bag

Place the pocket bag and the under pocket right sides together, pin all around, and stitch. Finish the raw edges with a serger or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying and give the inside of the pocket a neat finish.

  6. Secure the pocket

Position the pocket facing correctly onto the pocket bag, matching your pattern markings. Pin the upper and side edges, then stitch to secure the pocket firmly in place on the garment.

  7. Assemble the garment

Place the front and back garment pieces right sides together, pin the side seam carefully, and stitch to complete the assembly. Give the finished pocket area a final press for a crisp, professional result.

Pro tip

Take your time pressing at each step — especially around the pocket opening. Careful, thorough pressing is what gives an Italian pocket its distinctive crisp edge and professional finish. Rushing the pressing is the most common reason this pocket loses its clean shape.
