How to Sew a Cuff onto a Sleeve | Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial
A neatly sewn sleeve cuff gives blouses, shirts, dresses and other garments a clean, professional finish. This technique works especially well on gathered sleeves, but it can also be used on straight sleeve openings depending on your pattern.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to prepare the cuff, stitch and turn the short ends, attach it evenly to the sleeve and finish the cuff neatly around the wrist.
Materials needed
- Prepared sleeve
- Cuff pattern piece
- Matching thread
- Pins or sewing clips
- Fabric scissors
- Point turner or similar blunt tool
- Iron and ironing surface
Before you start
Prepare the sleeve according to your sewing pattern before attaching the cuff. If the sleeve opening is gathered, complete the gathering stitches first and distribute the fullness evenly so the sleeve fits the cuff.
Pressing the cuff accurately before sewing makes the final attachment much easier and helps create a crisp, even finish.
Why prepare the cuff before attaching it?
Pre-folding the seam allowances and stitching the short ends first gives the cuff its finished shape before it is joined to the sleeve. This makes it easier to enclose the sleeve edge neatly and helps keep both sides of the cuff even.
Step-by-step instructions

Press the cuff seam allowances
Fold the seam allowances along the top and bottom long edges of the cuff to the wrong side, following the measurements indicated in your sewing pattern. Press the folds carefully with an iron.

Fold the cuff in half
Fold the cuff in half lengthwise with right sides facing each other. Match the long edges and align both short ends carefully.

Stitch the short sides
Sew both short sides of the cuff using the seam allowance indicated in your pattern. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam to secure the stitching.

Turn and shape the cuff
Turn the cuff right side out. Carefully shape the corners using a point turner or another blunt tool, taking care not to push through the fabric.
Press the cuff flat so the edges and corners are crisp and even.

Insert the sleeve into the cuff
Insert the bottom of the sleeve into the cuff and align the sleeve edge with the prepared cuff edge.
If the sleeve opening is gathered, distribute the gathers evenly around the cuff, making sure there are no large or uneven bunches of fabric.

Pin and stitch the cuff
Pin or clip the cuff securely around the entire sleeve opening, checking that the folded edges remain even.
Stitch all the way around the cuff, keeping the seam smooth and making sure the sleeve edge remains neatly enclosed.

Optional: topstitch the cuff
For an extra-clean, professional finish, topstitch around the cuff close to the edge. Keep the stitching distance consistent all the way around.
Give the cuff one final press to set the seams and sharpen the finished shape.

If your sleeve is gathered, divide both the sleeve opening and the cuff into quarters before pinning them together. Match the quarter marks first, then distribute the gathers evenly between them. This helps prevent uneven fullness and makes the cuff sit much more smoothly.
Common sleeve cuff problems
The cuff corners look bulky
Make sure the short-side seam allowances are lying flat inside the cuff before turning. Shape the corners gently rather than forcing them outward.
The gathers are uneven
Distribute the gathers before stitching and check the sleeve from all sides. Matching quarter points between the sleeve and cuff makes even distribution much easier.
The cuff twists after sewing
Check that the cuff is not twisted before you begin pinning. Align both ends and work gradually around the sleeve opening before stitching.
The topstitching is uneven
Use the edge of your presser foot as a guide and sew slowly around the cuff. Press the cuff first so the edge is crisp and easier to follow.
