How to sew a neck facing in a garment with plackets
Combining a neckline facing with plackets requires careful folding, pressing, and stitching to achieve a clean, professional finish. This tutorial breaks the process down into clear steps so your neckline and plackets come together neatly every time.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Fold and press the plackets
Fold each placket 1 cm (⅜″) to the wrong side and press. Then fold again 3 cm (1¼″) to the right side of the garment and press firmly in place. Thorough pressing at this stage keeps the plackets aligned throughout the next steps.
-
Position the neckline facing
Fold the plackets to the right side of the garment and align the neckline facing on top, right sides together. Check carefully that all edges are lined up before pinning in place.
-
Stitch and clip the neckline
Stitch around the neckline with a 1 cm (⅜″) seam allowance. Once sewn, clip into the seam allowance at regular intervals along the curve — this releases tension and allows the neckline to lie flat and smooth when turned.
-
Press and understitch
Press the seam allowance toward the facing, then topstitch 1–2 mm (1/16″–1/8″) from the seam on the facing side to secure it. This understitching prevents the facing from rolling to the outside and keeps the neckline crisp.
-
Turn, push corners, and press
Turn the placket right side out and use a point turner to push the corners out fully. Press thoroughly all around the neckline and placket for a sharp, professional finish that holds its shape.
Pro tip
Press at every single step — this is one of those techniques where the iron does as much work as the sewing machine. Well-pressed folds and seams make each subsequent step easier to handle and are the key to a neat, flat neckline and placket combination.
