How to sew corner seams | Clean & professional finish

Sharp, precise corners are one of those details that instantly elevate the quality of a sewn garment. This step-by-step tutorial walks you through a simple, reliable method for achieving clean, professional-looking corner seams on any sewing project.

Materials needed

  • Fabric pieces to be joined
  • Matching thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Mark the corner

Mark the exact corner point on the fabric using tailor’s chalk or a removable pen. A precise mark is the foundation of a sharp, accurate corner.

  2. Pin the first seam

Place the fabric pieces right sides together and pin carefully along the first seam line, making sure the layers are perfectly aligned before you begin stitching.

  3. Stitch to the corner

Sew along the seam line and stop precisely at the marked corner point. Take your time as you approach the corner — stopping at exactly the right spot is key to a clean result.

  4. Lift the presser foot

With the needle down in the fabric, lift the presser foot. Keeping the needle down holds the fabric in place while you reposition for the next direction.

  5. Clip the corner

Carefully cut into the corner to release the seam allowance and allow the fabric to pivot smoothly. You can clip the bottom or top layer depending on your preference, as shown in the video.

  6. Turn the fabric

Pivot the fabric around the needle to align it with the next seam direction. Take a moment to check that the edges are perfectly lined up before continuing.

  7. Continue stitching

Lower the presser foot and continue sewing along the next seam. The result should be a sharp, clean corner with no puckering or misalignment.

Pro tip

Always keep the needle down when turning corners — this is the single most important habit for maintaining perfectly aligned seams. Slowing your machine speed as you approach the corner point also helps you stop at exactly the right spot every time.
