How to Overlock with a Sewing Machine

No overlocker? No problem. With your regular sewing machine, you can achieve a clean, secure seam edge. This quick two-step method combines a zigzag stitch with a straight stitch to mimic an overlocked edge and prevent any fabric from fraying.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. A

Sew a zigzag stitch along the fabric edge

Set the machine to a zigzag stitch and sew along the raw edge of the fabric, so that the needle’s right swing just clears the edge. This encloses the raw edge and prevents fraying. For most fabrics, use a medium stitch width and length.

  2. B

Sew a straight stitch to the left of the zigzag

Sew a straight stitch just to the left of the zigzag line, within the seam allowance. This reinforces the edge, gives the seam extra stability, and creates a clean, secure finish that closely resembles the result of an overlocker.

Pro Tip

For lightweight or loosely woven fabrics that fray easily, set the zigzag stitch a little tighter and sew directly on the fabric edge. For heavier fabrics, a wider zigzag provides better coverage. Always test your stitch settings on a scrap of the same fabric before starting on the garment.
