How to sew a fabric strap or belt loop | Clean 1 cm finish
Learn how to sew a clean, sturdy fabric strap, belt loop, or bow with a finished width of 1 cm. This versatile technique works beautifully on garments, bags, and accessories, and produces a neat, professional result with no raw edges.
Materials needed
- Fabric strip (4 cm wide)
- Matching thread
- Iron
- Sewing machine
Step-by-step instructions
-
Prepare the fabric strip
Start with a fabric strip measuring 4 cm in width and cut to your required length. This width gives you a finished strap or belt loop of approximately 1 cm — neat, sturdy, and with no bulk.
-
Fold the long edges inward
Fold both long edges of the fabric toward the centre so they meet in the middle. Press well with an iron to create sharp, even creases — a well-pressed fold is much easier to handle in the next steps.
-
Tuck in the short ends
Fold each short end inward slightly to neaten the raw edges, then press to hold the folds securely in place. This gives the strap clean, finished ends that need no additional stitching.
-
Fold in half lengthwise
Fold the strip in half lengthwise, bringing the two folded edges together. The strap should now measure 1 cm in width. Press firmly all the way along to lock in the shape before stitching.
-
Stitch the strap
Stitch close to the open edge of the strap to close it, sewing evenly along the full length. Then topstitch along the opposite edge as well — two lines of stitching give the strap extra strength and a neat, balanced finish.
-
Finish
Your fabric strap or belt loop is now complete and ready to attach to a garment, bag, bow, or any other sewing project. Give it a final press to keep everything crisp and flat.
Pro tip
This method works best with lightweight to medium-weight fabrics and helps reduce bulk while maintaining strength and durability. For very lightweight fabrics, a light application of spray starch before pressing helps the folds hold their shape and makes the strap much easier to handle at the machine.
