How to gather one piece of fabric onto another | Very easy

Gathering one piece of fabric onto another is a fundamental sewing skill used for skirts, sleeves, ruffles, and more. This tutorial walks you through a clean, reliable method that gives you even gathers and a professional finish every time.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Mark and prepare the fabric

Take the piece of fabric you want to gather and use tailor’s chalk or a fabric marker to clearly mark the area to be gathered. Marking the boundaries ensures your gathers stay within the correct section and are evenly distributed from the start.

  2. Sew the gathering stitches

Set your machine to the longest straight stitch and sew a first line close to the raw edge without backstitching — leaving the thread tails free is essential. Sew a second parallel line next to the first for more control and more even gathers.

  3. Assemble the pieces

Place the gathered piece and the ungathered piece right sides together. Align notches and seams carefully before pinning in place — good alignment at this stage ensures the seam matches perfectly once sewn.

  4. Pull the threads and adjust the gathers

Gently pull the bobbin threads from both stitching lines simultaneously, sliding the fabric along to form the gathers. Distribute them evenly along the full length until the gathered piece matches the length of the other piece, then secure everything with pins.

  5. Sew the final seam

Reduce your stitch length back to a normal setting and sew along the seam where the gathered fabric meets the other piece. Sew slowly and check that the gathers stay evenly distributed as you go.

  6. Remove the gathering stitches

Once the final seam is sewn, carefully remove the long gathering stitches if they are visible. Pull them out gently to avoid disturbing the finished seam, then press the seam for a clean result.

Pro tip

Sew slowly and keep the gathers evenly distributed as you stitch the final seam — this is the step where puckers are most likely to appear if the gathers shift. Pinning generously before sewing and checking the distribution every few centimetres as you go makes a big difference to the finished result.
