How to gather a piece of fabric | Very easy
Gathering is one of the most useful and versatile sewing techniques — it adds volume, creates shape, and brings fabric to a specific length. Whether you’re working on sleeves, skirts, or ruffles, this simple method gives you neat, even gathers every time.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Select the stitch
Set your sewing machine to the longest straight stitch available — around 3.5–6 mm. A longer stitch creates looser threads that are much easier to pull and gather evenly without breaking.
-
Sew the first line
Sew a first line of stitching close to the raw edge of the fabric — without backstitching at either end. Leaving the thread tails free is essential, as you’ll be pulling these to create the gathers.
-
Sew the second line (optional)
Sew a second line of stitching parallel and close to the first one — this is optional but highly recommended. Two rows of basting give you much more control when pulling the gathers and help distribute them more evenly along the full length.
-
Pull the threads
Gently pull the bobbin threads from both ends simultaneously, sliding the fabric along to form the gathers. Distribute them evenly along the full length until you reach your desired measurement, then secure the thread ends with a pin or a knot.
Pro tip
This technique works best on lightweight fabrics such as cotton, viscose, or rayon. Avoid heavy or thick fabrics as they are much harder to gather evenly and put more strain on the basting threads. Always pull both bobbin threads at the same time from each end for the most even distribution.
