How to gather fabric with dental floss

Dental floss is a surprisingly effective tool for gathering fabric — it’s strong, easy to pull, and won’t snap under tension the way regular sewing thread can. This quick two-step method gives you even, controlled gathers on any fabric length.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Sew a zigzag stitch over the dental floss

Position a length of dental floss along the edge of the fabric and sew over it with a wide zigzag stitch, making sure the stitches pass on either side of the floss without catching it. The floss must remain completely free so you can pull it to create the gathers.

  2. Pull the floss to create the gathers

Once the zigzag is sewn, gently pull the dental floss from one end to gather the fabric. Distribute the gathers evenly along the full length until you reach your desired fullness, then secure the ends with a pin to hold everything in place.

Pro tip

Dental floss won’t break under tension the way regular sewing thread does, making it ideal for gathering heavy fabrics or very long sections. Use unwaxed floss to prevent it from sliding too freely through the zigzag stitches — you’ll have much more control when pulling the gathers.
