How to create a slit opening on a garment | Clean finish
A slit opening is a refined detail that adds both function and elegance to tops and dresses. This tutorial shows you how to create a clean, precise slit using interfacing and proper pressing techniques — for a flawless, professional result every time.
Materials needed
- Matching thread
- Interfacing (optional but recommended)
- Scissors
- Tailor’s chalk or fabric marker
- Iron
- Pins or clips
Step-by-step instructions
-
Mark the slit placement
Use chalk or a fabric marker to draw the slit opening on the right side of your garment, then mark the same shape on the wrong side of the facing piece. Precise, matching marks on both layers are essential for a well-aligned slit.
-
Pin right sides together
Place the garment and facing right sides together, carefully aligning the slit markings on both layers. Pin securely all around the slit outline to hold everything in place while you stitch.
-
Draw parallel stitching lines
Draw parallel lines 2–3 mm away from your marked slit line on all sides to create a narrow stitching guide around the entire opening. These lines ensure your seam allowance is consistent all the way around.
-
Sew along the lines
Stitch precisely along the drawn parallel lines all the way around the slit opening. Use a small stitch length — around 2 mm — for better control and a cleaner finish, especially at the narrow ends and corners.
-
Cut the slit opening
Carefully cut down the centre of the marked slit line, stopping just before each end. Clip diagonally into each corner, getting as close to the stitching as possible without cutting through it — this is what allows the corners to turn out sharp and clean.
-
Turn the facing inside
Pull the facing through the slit opening to the wrong side of the garment. Work the fabric through gently and evenly until the facing sits completely on the inside with no twisting or pulling.
-
Press for clean edges
Press the slit opening flat with an iron, making sure the seam edges are crisp and sitting exactly on the edge with no facing rolling to the right side. Take your time at this step — thorough pressing is what makes the slit look truly professional.
-
Topstitch for a professional finish
From the right side of the garment, topstitch all around the slit opening approximately 2–3 mm from the edge. This secures the facing in place and gives the slit a polished, tailored look that holds its shape with wear.
Pro tip
When cutting the slit, use sharp scissors and work slowly — this is the most critical step. Clipping carefully right into each corner, without cutting through the stitching, is what allows the corners to turn out sharp and prevents puckering. If your fabric is lightweight, applying a small piece of interfacing behind each corner before stitching gives extra stability.
