How to Sew a Hood onto a Coat | Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial
A neatly attached hood gives your coat a comfortable, practical finish. Carefully matching the neckline seams and securing the inner seam allowances helps the hood and lining stay in place.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to position the prepared hood, pin and stitch the neckline, and secure the inside seam allowances with a few loose hand stitches.
Materials needed
- Coat and lining prepared for the hood attachment
- Prepared hood and hood lining
- Matching thread
- Pins or sewing clips
- Sewing machine with a needle suitable for your fabric
- Hand-sewing needle
- Thread snips or scissors
Before you start
Assemble the coat, hood and lining to the stage required by your sewing pattern. This tutorial focuses on the neckline attachment and the internal hand stitching, rather than the construction of the hood itself.
Identify the matching seams and neckline markings before pinning. Use the seam allowance specified in your pattern, and keep access to the inside so you can secure the neckline seam allowances before completing the lining.
Why secure the neckline seam allowances together?
Joining the outer and lining neckline seam allowances helps prevent the lining from shifting or pulling away at the base of the hood. Loose hand stitches hold the layers together while allowing a little movement, without showing on the outside.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Position the hood
Place the hood against the coat neckline with right sides facing each other. Align the neckline edges and check that the hood is correctly positioned, with no twisted layers.
-
Match the seams and pin
Match the corresponding seams and pattern markings first. Pin or clip along the neckline, keeping the edges aligned without stretching either layer.
Check that the fabric lies smoothly between the pins and that no folds are caught underneath.
-
Stitch the neckline
Machine-stitch along the pinned neckline using the seam allowance indicated in your pattern. Secure the beginning and end of the seam, and remove pins or clips before they reach the needle.
Keep the other layers clear of the stitching area so they do not get caught in the seam. Once finished, check the seam before arranging the hood and lining in place.
-
Secure the inner seam allowances
Working from inside the coat, bring the outer and lining neckline seam allowances together. Match the corresponding seams and hold the allowances together with pins or clips.
Join them with a few loose hand stitches. Sew through the seam allowances only, without catching the outside of the coat, and avoid pulling the thread tight.
-
Turn and check the hood
Turn the coat right side out and arrange the hood and lining. Smooth the neckline gently and check that the lining sits comfortably without pulling.
Your hood is now attached! Continue with any remaining finishing steps specified in your sewing pattern.
Professional sewing tip
Before securing the neckline seam allowances by hand, arrange the hood and lining as they will sit when worn. Then access the allowances carefully without disturbing their position. Keep a little slack in your stitches so the neckline can move comfortably.
Common hood attachment problems
The neckline puckers
Check for small folds caught in the seam or fabric stretched during stitching. Unpick the affected section, realign the layers and sew again without pulling the fabric.
The hood sits unevenly
Check that the corresponding seams and pattern markings match, and that the seam allowance is consistent. Correct any misalignment before completing the inside hand stitching.
The lining pulls at the neckline
Check that the lining is not twisted and that the hand stitches are not too tight. If necessary, remove those stitches, let the layers settle naturally and secure the allowances again more loosely.
The hand stitches show on the outside
Your needle may have caught the outer fabric beyond the seam allowance. Carefully remove the visible stitches and sew again through the seam allowances only.
