Alternative way to finish an elastic waistband
This quick technique offers an alternative method for securing an elastic waistband using a zigzag stitch at regular intervals. It’s a fast, effective approach that keeps the elastic evenly distributed and the waistband lying flat without a continuous seam all the way around.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Sew zigzag stitches at regular intervals
Sew a zigzag stitch every 5 cm (2″) — or at whatever interval suits your project — moving from point to point across the waistband. Space the points evenly all the way around so the elastic is secured consistently and the gathers are distributed uniformly.
-
Lift, turn, and continue
At each point, lift the presser foot with the needle down, pivot the fabric to align with the next point, lower the foot, and continue sewing. Keeping the needle down while turning maintains accurate positioning between each zigzag.
Pro tip
This method is especially useful when you want to keep the gathers evenly distributed around the full waistband without them shifting over time. Use a ballpoint needle to avoid damaging the elastic, and test your zigzag width and stitch length on a scrap first to make sure the stitch catches both the fabric and the elastic securely.
