How to sew a thread loop | Elegant hand-finished closure

A thread loop is a delicate, refined closure that adds an elegant finishing touch to lightweight garments, blouses, and dresses. Worked entirely by hand, it creates a discreet and professional button fastening that sits flat and blends seamlessly into the garment.

Materials needed

  • Matching sewing thread (doubled for strength)
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Garment with marked button placement

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the thread

Thread the needle with a doubled strand of matching thread and tie a secure knot at the end. Using a double strand from the start gives the finished loop extra strength and durability, especially on garments that will be worn or washed frequently.

  2. Mark the loop placement

Determine the starting and ending points of the loop according to the size and position of the button. The loop should be just large enough for the button to pass through comfortably — mark both points clearly before you begin.

  3. Form the thread loops

Starting from the inside of the garment, create three loose loops of thread between the two marked points. Before continuing, check that the button passes comfortably through the loop — adjust the size if needed at this stage, as it is much harder to correct later.

  4. Secure the loop

Following the video instructions, stitch along the thread loops from one end to the other, forming small, tight knots all the way around until the entire loop is fully reinforced and stable. Work evenly and consistently for the neatest result.

  5. Finish the thread loop

Pass the needle to the wrong side of the fabric and secure the thread with two tight knots close to the fabric. Trim the excess thread cleanly. Your elegant thread loop is now complete and ready to use.

Pro tip

Always use a doubled strand of thread for added strength — a single strand can wear through quickly, especially on garments that are fastened and unfastened regularly. Match the thread colour as closely as possible to the fabric so the loop blends in for a truly discreet finish.
