How to sew a double welt pocket | Step-by-step
A double welt pocket is one of the most elegant details in tailoring — a sleek, clean opening with two narrow welts framing it, commonly used on jackets, trousers, and blazers. This tutorial walks you through every step for a sharp, professional result.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Interface the placement
On the wrong side of your main fabric, apply interfacing to the area where the welt pocket will sit. This adds structure and prevents the pocket opening from distorting over time.
-
Mark the pocket opening
Using an erasable pen, draw a precise rectangle on the right side of the fabric — this marks your pocket opening. Accurate marking at this stage is essential for clean, symmetrical welts.
-
Prepare the welts
Fold each welt piece in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press firmly to create a sharp, even crease. Well-pressed welts are the foundation of a crisp, tailored pocket opening.
-
Sew the welts
Place the first welt along the top line of the rectangle with raw edges aligned, then stitch along the seam line backstitching at each end. Repeat with the second welt along the bottom line, stitching exactly the same way. Both stitch lines must be parallel and equal in length.
-
Cut the opening
Cut between the two stitch lines, stopping 1 cm from each end. Then clip diagonally into each corner to form small triangles — these are what allow the welts to turn through cleanly. Take your time here and cut carefully.
-
Turn and press
Turn both welts through to the wrong side of the fabric and press them flat. Fold the small corner triangles inward and press them too — they need to lie completely flat for a sharp, clean pocket opening.
-
Loosely hand stitch
Hand stitch the welts together loosely across the opening to hold them in position while you attach the pocket bags. These stitches are temporary and will be removed at the end.
-
Attach the pocket bags
With right sides together, place one pocket piece behind the top welt and sew along the previous seam line. Repeat for the bottom welt with the second pocket piece, making sure both are securely attached.
-
Close the pocket
Sew down both sides of the pocket bag, making sure to catch the small corner triangles as you go. This secures the corners firmly and gives the pocket opening a clean, professional finish.
-
Finish the edges
Use a serger or zigzag stitch to finish the raw edges of the pocket bag and prevent fraying. Remove the temporary hand stitching from across the opening and give everything a final press — your double welt pocket is complete.
Pro tip
This technique works best on medium to heavy woven fabrics — avoid very lightweight or stretchy fabrics as they make it difficult to achieve sharp, crisp welts. Press at every single step and take your time cutting the opening; these two habits alone make the biggest difference to the final result.
