How to sew a narrow double-fold hem | Clean & professional finish
A narrow double-fold hem gives a neat, discreet finish with no visible raw edges — ideal for lightweight fabrics and delicate garments. This technique works beautifully on straight or slightly curved edges and is an essential method for blouses, dresses, and fine sewing projects.
Materials needed
- Fabric edge to hem
- Matching thread
- Iron
- Sewing machine
Step-by-step instructions
-
Fold the raw edge
Fold the raw edge of the fabric toward the wrong side by a small amount. Press carefully to create a clean, sharp fold — an accurate first fold is the foundation of a neat narrow hem.
-
Stitch close to the fold
Sew a straight stitch approximately 2 mm from the folded edge, keeping your stitching as even and consistent as possible along the full length of the hem.
-
Trim away excess fabric
Carefully trim the excess fabric close to the stitching line. This step removes the bulk that would otherwise make the second fold thick and uneven, and is what gives the hem its characteristic narrow, fine appearance.
-
Fold again and stitch
Fold the hem again along the stitched line, enclosing the trimmed raw edge completely. Stitch directly on top of the first stitching line, then press the hem firmly to set the final finish.
Pro tip
This technique is perfect for lightweight to medium-weight fabrics and is especially well suited to blouses, dresses, skirts, and delicate hems where a discreet, fine finish is important. Use the very tip of the iron when pressing to keep the fold precise without distorting the fabric on either side.
